The Poetry of the Rose Garden: Types of Roses with Evocative Names

The Italian Garden of Villa Le Corti houses a wide array of different types of roses whose names evoke poetic images and timeless ideals.

  • Gloria di Roma Rose: A Hybrid Tea created in 1935 by the famous Italian hybridizer Domenico Aicardi. It is one of those types of rose bushes with a classic and extremely elegant character. It is distinguished by large, double, well-formed flowers of a deep, velvety, rich cherry-red color that does not fade in the sun. This repeat-blooming bush variety is particularly appreciated for the texture of its petals, which seem to be made of heavy silk.
  • Eterna Giovinezza Rose: A Hybrid Tea created in 1937, also by Domenico Aicardi. This specific type of rose stands out for its soft pastel pink color, with coral or salmon tones at the center, as well as for its fragrance and the texture of its petals. These silky petals give these types of rose plants an appearance of extraordinary elegance and sophistication. The name perfectly reflects the plant’s ability to rebloom enthusiastically throughout the growing season.

  • Snow Carpet Rose: A groundcover variety created in 1980 by the famous New Zealand hybridizer Samuel McGredy IV. Among the most enchanting types of white roses, this specific type of rose is renowned for its small, pure, and brilliant double flowers that entirely cover the foliage. It creates a stunning visual effect reminiscent of a soft “carpet of snow”, making it truly stand out when comparing different types of roses.
  • Buff Beauty Rose: A Hybrid Musk introduced in 1939 by Ann Bentall. Among the different types of roses, it is renowned for its medium-large double flowers of a warm, luminous apricot-yellow that gently fades into cream and sulfur yellow as the days pass. It is also famous for its intense, sweet, and fruity fragrance featuring notes of tea and musk.
  • Parfum de l’Haÿ Rose: A Rugosa rose created in France in 1901 by the hybridizer and collector Jules Gravereaux. This variety is legendary for its intense, sweet, and intoxicating scent, as well as its large double corollas with deep purplish-crimson petals that exude a wild yet sophisticated charm. It blooms abundantly and can also be trained upwards, making it a splendid option for those exploring various types of climbing roses.

  • Gruss an Coburg Rose: A Hybrid Tea created in Germany in 1927 by Peter Lambert. It features the typical shape of early 20th-century roses, with a bud that opens into a rich, elegant cup whose iridescent colors seem to capture the light of a sunset. Its petals delicately fade from golden cream to apricot pink, featuring warm salmon tones in the heart of the flower. The foliage is a leathery dark green.
  • De Rescht Rose: A continuous-blooming Portland rose with origins shrouded in mystery. It is beloved among different types of rose plants for its small, densely petaled flowers of an intense crimson red with purplish-violet hues, and for its strong damask fragrance. Although it is believed to be a very ancient type of rose originally from Iran, the plant owes its modern popularity to the famous English gardener Nancy Lindsay, who “rediscovered” it and brought it to Europe in the 1940s, saving it from oblivion.
